On a glorious Easter weekend I was privileged to be the Wedding Photographer for Hannah and Ian’s Churchill College wedding in Cambridge, followed by a reception in the beautiful gardens of Hannah’s parents’ home.
The day began at the contemporary church within the grounds of Churchill College; Whilst the college itself is a national and commonwealth memorial to Winston Churchill, the chapel is apparently known as the chapel at Churchill rather than the chapel of Churchill; a compromise arrived at when it was first built in response to the objection by some college Fellows at having a religious building within a scientific institution! History aside the amazing blue stained glass window of the building softens its masculine lines and the historic Winston Churchill bell signalling the arrival of the bride is an unusual feature.
With such a modern building the service was lit beautifully with natural light, the type of light that I favour for my style of documentary wedding photography, where I try to work with predominantly available light rather than using flash.
With the service over it was time to relax and kick off the celebrations with a very energetic throwing of the confetti! Traditionally most confetti images are in colour but they can look incredible in black and white and I love the confetti images of Hannah and Ian. They really draw you in to focus on the energy of guests throwing the confetti and the joy of Hannah and Ian as they exit the church.
Spring time in England of course can be quite variable but it is a magnificent time for amazing skies, trees in bloom, and spring flowers providing their own unique back drop.
The spring blossom in the College grounds provided an amazing backdrop for a few relaxed shots of Hannah and Ian before they re-joined their guests in the beautiful gardens at home for champagne and canapés; a veritable English Garden party on a spring day that set the tone for the celebrations in the marquee. Quietly elegant with a few tears shed in the speeches before people let their hair down on the dance floor to party the night away. Hannah and Ian’s day was lovely to be part of and thank you to them both for allowing me to share it with them.
Hannah dropped me a line following their day with some really kind words: This is a quick note to thank you for all your work on Saturday – I know we haven’t seen anything yet, but Ian and I were delighted with what we saw of your work and are very grateful for your good humour and patience! and then later………..Well I must have looked through the preview 5 times already and am in tears every time!! Wow…and I can’t wait to see the rest!!
