With an original date planned for May, Lisa and David finally tied the knot at Hertfordshire wedding venue Sheene Mill earlier in August. With a strong focus on family, children were very much part of their day and the atmosphere was relaxed and fun – perfectly suited to the Documentary Wedding Photography style and the way that I work – and a style that Lisa and David were very comfortable with as I had photographed them in a lifestyle portrait session previously.
The rain unfortunately did not hold off for the ceremony but the sun returned later in the day enabling us to get some very relaxed photographs of Lisa and David in the gardens of Sheene Mill.
Being a documentary style photographer I don’t focus on formal shots or too many details but I do like reflection shots. They add interest for the viewer and add a twist on the more conventional shots – importantly they are a great way of getting a shot if room and a view of the couple are limited, as can happen in some venues! You can see an example of this type of shot with Lisa reflected in the mirror prior to the ceremony and again of David smiling at Lisa as he says his vows
For detail shots the brides dress can provide inspiration and Lisa did not disappoint with her layered full length gown; a shot taken at eye level with the gown laid across the bed adds a sense of glamour and expectation.
Finally an amusing note on guests and cameras – with the digital age many couples rely on friends for fabulous shots in the absence of a professional wedding photographer. Lisa and David obviously invested in a professional photographer but they were very amused when their friend realised and pointed out to them that she had left the lens cap on her camera and had therefore missed her own shots of Lisa and David coming down the aisle!
The day also proved the value of preparation on my part. As I was about to take a group shot a small element of the lens failed and lens and camera body parted company – a very good lens hit the concrete with a resounding thud accompanied by a collective sharp intake of breath from the guests and cries of ‘I didn’t touch anything!’ from the groom………..disaster you may think but ever prepared I was able to swap to another lens and rely on insurance and a good repair company to ensure that I was back in business with my original lens in good time for my next event.
