As a collective, photographers generally advise each other never to photograph friends, family or other photographers! Well, I broke two of those rules when I photographed the wedding at Cambridgeshire venue Wadenhoe House of friend and fellow photographer Chris and his fiancée Joanne.
With both the ceremony and reception being held at this beautiful Jacobean mansion dating back to 1617 (and still family owned) it gave the day a really intimate feel. I particularly loved the shots I was able to capture in the grounds as Chris and Joanne returned from a private blessing, walking through the late summer lavender. As a Documentary Wedding Photographer I always try to be discreet and by taking the shot from a little distance away it ensures that I don’t intrude on any private moments but does ensure that a lovely moment in time is captured for the bride and groom.
One of the things I always find interesting is that there will always be one or two guests who hide from the camera and in equal measure there are always one or two people who absolutely love the camera. As I have mentioned many times my style of photography is about documenting the day as it unfolds and not forcing the pace or the action but it is also about striking a balance. For example if I have a number of people who want to hog or avoid the lens so to speak I have one or two techniques that I use. For those who are camera shy I will generally ask them to ignore me and just let me get one or two candid shots so that I can leave them alone, highlighting the point that as a guest their hosts would surely love an image of them from the day. In that way I can keep my documentary style and keep guests and bride and groom happy.
As I mentioned at the beginning this wedding was for a friend and colleague. As a professional photographer I didn’t let the fact that Chris is a friend detract from the work to be done. The day was a great success and Chris and Joanne loved their images; in their own words they said Testimonials‘thanks for working so hard on the day…you did us proud and we love the images’. To ensure that they got those great images, I remembered and put into practice the usual rules of looking after my clients as I would expect to be looked after on such an important day; not switching off too early just because they are a friend and in particular I keep business and friendship separate when working – it makes for a very successful day and will ensure you give friends great memories of their day….
